Project Manager

SCHAFER & COMPANY IS SEEKING AN Architect with a minimum of 10 years of experience in high-end classical residential design. The ideal candidate is fluent in the classical language, with a strong understanding of architectural precedent and a high level of skill in technical drawing, including construction documentation and detailed millwork and cabinetry design. A proven ability to lead thoughtful, highly detailed residential projects from concept through completion is essential.

Project Managers are responsible for the disciplined execution of projects across all phases. This role requires both organizational rigor and meaningful engagement in the design process, advancing the work while ensuring it is clearly and accurately translated into coordinated documentation. Project Managers may lead smaller or moderately complex projects independently or support larger, more complex efforts under senior leadership. In all cases, they provide structure, continuity, and clarity for both clients and internal teams.

Success in this role is defined by reliable project delivery, strong coordination, thoughtful contribution to design development, and consistent control of scope, schedule, and fee.

The candidate will be responsible for:

  • Managing day-to-day execution of one or more firm projects at a time, through all phases.
  • Serving as the primary client contact for assigned projects.
  • Supporting and contributing to design development.
  • Coordinating consultants and internal teams.
  • Developing and maintaining project schedules.
  • Monitoring fee performance and overall project financial health.
  • Preparing monthly invoices and cover letters.
  • Overseeing the preparation of construction documents.
  • Maintaining project records and documentation systems.
  • Participating in site visits and construction administration.
  • Assigning and supervising team tasks.
  • Supporting professional development within the team through mentorship and feedback.

Candidate’s Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of building codes, permitting processes & construction document production is required.
  • Applicants must be proficient in AutoCAD and hand sketching.
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree from an accredited School of Architecture is required.
  • Verbal and written communication skills must be excellent.
  • Proficiency with SketchUp is desired.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, & InDesign) is desired.
  • Proficiency in using Bluebeam is desired.
  • Experience with classical traditional high-end residential projects is required.
  • Licensure is strongly preferred.

Salary Range: $130,000-$155,000, commensurate with experience.

Job Captain

The ideal candidate is fluent in the classical language, with a strong understanding of architectural precedent and a high level of skill in technical drawing, including construction documentation and detailed millwork and cabinetry design.

Job Captains are responsible for leading and managing the preparation and coordination of the entire construction document set for projects. This role requires a solid technical understanding, reliability, and the ability to organize and execute documentation efforts under senior leadership.

Success in this role is reflected in well-organized, coordinated documentation; responsiveness to project demands; and continued growth in technical depth and independent problem-solving capability.

The candidate will be responsible for:

  • Leading and being chiefly responsible for the project team’s preparation and coordination of construction documents
  • Delegating and directing documentation efforts while providing technical leadership and mentorship to the team
  • Supporting project-related client communication
  • Translating sketches and design direction into detailed drawings and coordinated documentation
  • Coordinating consultant information within the drawing set and resolving coordination issues
  • Maintaining drawing organization and project file systems
  • Preparing transmittals and tracking documentation revisions and issuances
  • Maintaining project logs and directories
  • Reviewing shop drawings and submittals (as assigned)
  • Supporting construction administration
  • Conducting code and zoning research (as assigned)
  • Assisting in directing and coordinating production tasks
