In May, Schafer & Co. Associates Brad Devendorf and Chris Whelan joined the ICAA for their architectural study tour of Country Houses in Derbyshire. After days touring houses and estates in the English countryside, they returned home filled with inspiration and ideas for our own projects in the States.

Mets Game

One of our favorite firm traditions, cheering on the Mets at a summer game, took place on June 11th this year. We loved watching the Mets beat the Cardinals 5–4!

In April, Gil got to travel down to Savannah and the beautiful campus of SCAD to speak with David Netto at their annual SCADstyle event, generously sponsored by Waterworks. In addition to sharing a behind-the-scenes look at some of their collaborations, Gil and David were able to meet a number of the talented students and next-gen designers and architects at the college. Schafer & Co. Architect Jack Edwards was one of the instructors for the ICAA’s Summer Studio 2025, a four-week intensive program for university students and recent graduates. The summer season has brought a flurry of wonderful media coverage for the firm. At the end of May, Elle Decor ran a story on an 1840s townhouse in Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill neighborhood that we renovated and restored for a family of five, in collaboration with interior designer Mark Cunningham. A few weeks later, in late June, Architectural Digest ran a feature on a new country house in Vermont that we designed with Miles Redd of Redd | Kahoi and Miranda Brooks for a client who wanted to honor his childhood memories of the area while creating a new retreat for his own family. Gil was also interviewed by Business of Home for a feature on the prevalence of and increased interest in creating family compounds, and he was profiled by Traditional Building magazine in their June issue. Summer in the Hamptons

This special house in Southampton on Long Island, a new project created in collaboration with interior designer Rita Konig and landscape architect Ed Hollander, was published in AD’s summer issue. The story perfectly captures the spirit of the family who lives there, and what was a very joyful process of making this welcoming summer retreat for them. In addition to the magazine story, we filmed a video that pulls back the curtain on our design process. Gil and interior designer Rita Konig walk through a few of the spaces and talk about their inspiration, how they make certain decisions, and the essential design elements that make a house a home. McKim, Mead & White Award

We are incredibly grateful to the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art’s New York chapter for awarding our New Coastal Residence with a McKim, Mead & White Award for “Residential Architecture: New Construction Over 5,000 sq. ft.” Designed for longtime clients who have deep roots in Southampton’s summer community, the exceptional site — with wetlands overlooking the bay to the north and ocean frontage to the south — presented significant building constraints. Our design, which positioned the house to maximize water views on both sides without becoming imposing, draws inspiration from the traditional shingled houses of the 1920s and ’30s in the region to help it feel authentically rooted in Southampton’s architectural legacy. Our frequent collaborators, interior designer David Netto and landscape designer Miranda Brooks, brought their own inimitable styles to the project, and together we created a house that feels elegant but playful, and is perfectly suited to the relaxed warmth of the owners and life at the beach.

Celebrating Two ICAA Awards for
Our New Lakeside Residence

WHAT AN HONOR to have our New Lakeside Residence win two Institute of Classical Architecture & Art awards for “Residential Architecture: New Construction Under 5,000 sq. ft.,” this fall. We received a McKim, Mead & White Award from the ICAA’s New York Chapter and a Bulfinch Award from the ICAA’s New England Chapter. Perched on the shore of Vermont’s Lake Champlain, this new house was designed to reflect Vermont’s Colonial and Federal architectural as an elegant and comfortable weekend and summer escape for a young, New York City-based family. We were fortunate to collaborate with our creative clients, interior designer Miles Redd of Redd|Kahoi, and landscape designer Miranda Brooks to create a house that feels so connected to its site while offering visual surprises and delights that unfold as you move through it. In addition to AD featuring our new Southamton project in their July/August issue, we were delighted to have another oceanside Hamptons project (which was also a winner of a 2025 McKim, Mead & White Award) featured in a multi-page spread in Vogue’s summer issue. Traditional Building featured our Palladio Award winning project in Maine in their August issue, and later that month, Gil and his wife, interior designer Courtnay Daniels, shared some of their favorite Maine haunts with Frederic magazine in anticipation of the Downeast Antiques Show. [Middle image: Simon Upton]

This summer also brought a new chapter for Gil who, after 26 years at his beloved house in the Hudson Valley, put Middlefield up for sale in order to start a new architectural adventure with Courtnay. A number of media outlets, including Elle Decor and journalist Robert Khederian’s popular substack Not Enough Hangers, wrote up the sale and interviewed Gil about the property and his future plans. Firm Volleyball Win

Not surprisingly, our team’s talents extend beyond the office, and we were excited to have an outstanding summer volleyball season. The firm’s team plays in Volo’s beach volleyball league with games held on Pier 25 on the West Side Highway. We ended the season with a 6-0 record and had a good run in the playoffs. The countdown to our 2026 season is already on!

We loved visiting the new Waterworks Flatiron Showroom for a private tour and happy hour. In October, the Waterworks team generously walked us through their new renovated and expanded showroom, and we got to enjoy their beautiful space while learning more about the company’s new products, chatting about projects, and enjoying a lovely spread of food and drinks.  Thank you, Waterworks!

Gil awarded
Albert Simons Medal
of Excellence

Gil was honored to receive the Simons Medal of Excellence, an award created in honor of Albert Simons, a former College of Charleston professor and a local preservationist. The Simons Medal is awarded annually by the College of Charleston’s School of the Arts’ Historic Preservation and Community Planning Program. The award ceremony was held on the evening of October 30th in the Simons Center Recital Hall on the College’s campus.

Gil has continued to travel the country for the last few of the Home At Last book tour events. In late May, he spoke at the Luxury Design Summit on Cape Cod. August took him to Maine, where he spoke at the Downeast Antiques Show with friend and frequent collaborator, interior designer Rita Konig. He spoke with another friend and collaborator, designer David Netto, at the Lauritzen Gardens Antiques & Design Show in September, and gave the keynote address at the Traditional Building Seminar in the Hudson Valley in October. In November, he was in conversation with another dear friend and collaborator, Bunny Williams, and Veranda editor in chief Steele Marcoux for the Albermarle Garden Club’s annual Design Forum event. Staff Marathoners

Congratulations to our team members Jack Calvert and Sarah Moshier who ran the New York City Marathon on November 2nd. This was Jack’s fifth marathon and Sarah’s first.

Addison Mizner Award

What an honor to receive a Mizner Award for “Residential – Single Family Over 10,000 SF” from the Florida chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art for our New Family Home in Hobe Sound. Designed for an empty-nester couple as a year-round family retreat, this new house is set on three-acres along South Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway and was inspired by the vernacular cottages of the Caribbean West Indies, many of which also claim kinship with historic homes in the American South, where our clients are from. We were also delighted to see that Kayla Rembold, who was an intern at SBA in 2023, was a winner of the Mizner’s “Emerging Classicist” award. Congratulations to Kayla!

Gil’s Home At Last book tour has continued into 2026 as the book continues to be a big seller for Rizzoli. In January, Gil spoke at the Tangerine Theater in Hobe Sound, Florida, followed by a talk with David Netto in Palm Beach a few days later for Palm Beach Design Days. In March, Gil spoke to a full house at the Richmond Woman’s Club; in April, he presented at the Longue Vue House & Gardens 2025 Design Symposium in New Orleans; and in May, he gave the keynote address at the Luxury Home Design Summit in Cape Cod. Upcoming events include a talk with interior designer Rita Konig at the Downeast Antiques Show in August, and a conversation with Bunny Williams in November at the annual Albermarle Garden Club Design Forum in Charlottesville, Virginia. The firm is grateful to have been covered in several different press features over the last few months. In January, Gil and his wife, interior designer Courtnay Daniels, welcomed The New York Times into their Upper East Side apartment to talk about some of their favorite design finds. The Seattle Times also ran the story. Also in January, The Winter Show – a longtime favorite antiques show of the firm – interviewed Gil about collecting, design, and the apartment he and Courtnay share, for their catalog. In other recent media coverage, Luxe included Gil’s newest book, Home At Last, in their roundup of best books from 2024; UK House & Garden ran an excerpt of the Vermont home from the book; and Country Living included rooms from two of our projects – the renovation of the historic William C. Gatewood Carriage House and the mudroom from a new house in Southampton – in their February issue.

Palladio Award

We are honored to receive a Palladio Award for our restoration and renovation of The American Boathouse. This was a special project for our firm, done in collaboration with landscape architect Stephen Mohr and builder Jay Fischer, as well as with our incredible clients, who wanted to preserve the character and history of the building, which was originally constructed in 1905 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, while reinventing the interior spaces to give it life for future generations. Bulfinch Awards

We are honored to receive a Bulfinch Award in the “Residential Restoration, Renovation, or Addition” category for our restoration and renovation of The American Boathouse. The awards ceremony was held on November 9, 2024, at the Harvard Club of Boston.

The American Boathouse, originally built in 1904, has a rich history and appears on the National Register of Historic Places, which means no major changes could be made to its appearance. In collaboration with landscape architect Stephen Mohr and builder Jay Fischer, we were able to faithfully restore the Boathouse in form and function, reusing as much of the existing building material as possible, while reimagining it for a new generation of owners. Lutyens Tour

Continuing education has always been an important part of our firm culture and our team members regularly attend tours, classes and symposiums about architecture, design and landscape. In November, design associate Chris Whelan was fortunate to join an ICAA tour focusing on the architecture of Sir Edwin Lutyens, which provided an opportunity to visit and study various country residences and other sites designed by Lutyens and his contemporaries in Surrey, West Sussex, East Sussex and Kent in England. WE WERE HAPPY TO BE INVITED TO participate in The New York School of Interior Design’s fall exhibit, “The Persistence of Hand Drawing: Interior Rendering Today.” Our pieces, which include floorplans and sectional drawings, focus on the collaborative process we use for our projects. The show features our collaboration with interior designer David Netto. The exhibit, which shows a collection of hand drawn works from 11 other New York-based architects and interior designers, is open through April 3, 2025. GIL’S NEW BOOK Home At Last has continued to appear in media these past few months, and we are grateful to the many editors who have shared our work on their pages and websites. Recent coverage includes features and reviews in UK House & Garden print edition and on UK House & Garden’s website, in Traditional Home, Maine Home + Design, Incollect magazine, Frederic, Southern Home, DuJour, Manhattan magazine and on Habitually Chic. Galerie magazine listed it as one of the best new design books of the year. Veranda also highlighted Gil’s last book, A Place to Call Home, as one of the best books according to designers. Book Tour Highlights

GIL HAS CONTINUED HIS BUSY YEAR, squeezing book events in between project work and site visits. In September, Robert Kime hosted a cocktail party and book signing for the London book launch. Gil then traveled to Birmingham, Alabama, in early October, where he gave a keynote address at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens’ Antiques at the Gardens show. Later in October, he spoke with dear friends Bunny Williams and Suzanne Tucker at San Francisco’s The Fall Show, where he was also honored by the Northern California chapter of the ICAA at one of the Show’s luncheons. October ended in Dallas, where Gil spoke at two private lectures and luncheons and had a book signing at the St. Michael’s Women’s Exchange. In November, Gil was joined by friends and frequent collaborators interior designer Rita Konig and landscape designer Cecilia de Grelle for a conversation moderated by Jennifer Ash Rudick at Casa Branca’s new Palm Beach shop. This special event was part of the Florida ICAA chapter’s “Timeless Collaborations” series.
